The inside · a question

Who can sub on bass Friday?

Only players who said yes to Friday Subs can come up.

“Bass player from Veracruz, eleven years in Port Ellery. Subs on short notice. Wants his written English to sound like his spoken English.”

This Friday at the Ferry Room

Three bands, one horn short.

The Ferry Room · Pier 3, Water Street · doors 7:30

Friday 2 October

  1. 8:00

    Low Water Mark

Harbor folk with a pedal steel. Four songs about the same boat.

  2. 9:00

    The Breakwater Four

Hard bop from the fish-market end of Front Street. A trumpet short this week.

  3. 10:15

    Salt Road

Country songs played too fast. Earplugs at the bar, free.

$12 at the door, $8 before eight. All ages until ten.The door is split between the bands. Tickets and the bar keep the room open.

Asked this morning · waiting

The Breakwater Four’s trumpet player is out. Lena asked Kofi Mensah, who plays trumpet in Horns and Strings, to join Friday Subs Mon 28 Sep, 08:15 UTC. He keeps no auto-accept rule, so the ask waits for him until Wed 30 Sep, 08:15 UTC.

See the ask as Kofi sees it

This is most Fridays. A drummer’s kid gets sick, a bass player’s van won’t start, a horn player takes a wedding. Lena has filled a Friday bill at five in the afternoon more times than she can count, and Friday Subs is how she does it now.

A band that loses a player tells Lena. Lena asks the Pool. The player who comes in gets paid by the band, usually out of the door. Nobody pays the Pool, and the Pool pays nobody.

The Pools

Five Pools. Every cover says whose it is.

Each Pool is a list with a name on the cover, a keeper, and a charter that says what it’s for. Your profile stays on your own page. One page can sit in several Pools and leave any of them.

Friday Subs

Players who will fill in on short notice for bills at the Ferry Room. Paid by the band or the door, never by this Pool. Say yes ahead of time with an auto-accept rule, or answer each ask as it comes.

How a sub call works

Five o’clock, Thursday.

First, you’re asked in.

Lena sends you an ask to join Friday Subs. It says who keeps the Pool, what it’s for, who can see it, and how you leave. You say yes or no, and a no is remembered: she can’t ask again unless you let her. Asks in Friday Subs wait 48 hours, then quietly expire. §5.2

Or you say yes ahead of time.

Some players keep an auto-accept rule, like “drums and sub, from curators signed in with OAuth, public Pools only.” The rule says yes for them, they get a notice every time, and they can undo it. It’s off unless you write one, and you can keep five at most. §5.5

  1. Somebody cancels.

The band tells Lena who they’re missing and when.

  2. Lena asks the Pool.

In plain words: “who can sub on bass Friday?” Only players who said yes to Friday Subs can come up.

  3. She writes to them.

Through the Pool, signed in with OAuth. Most players take messages from pool-mates only. §7.1 §7.2

  4. The player says yes or no.

To the gig, this time. The band pays them. The Pool never does.

What it costs

The back of the book.

  • Joining a PoolFreeAny of the five. You say yes to an ask, or keep a rule that says it for you.
  • Being introducedFreeNobody pays to be asked, to be found, or to be written to. Not players, not bands.
  • LeavingFreeOne click, from any page or message. You’re out in under a minute. §5.3

Where the money comes from. Tickets and the bar keep the Ferry Room open. Neap Tide sells records. Bands pay their players, often from their share of the door. The Pools cost us an afternoon a week and earn nothing.

We don’t sell the lists, we don’t rank anyone, and we don’t take a cut of a gig. If a band asks what a sub costs, the answer is between the band and the player.

Write to us at players@ferryroom.example, or come to the counter at Neap Tide. Ozzie will tell you which Pool you want, and possibly which record.

Who keeps the Pools

Three people you already know.

Every keeper’s verification is printed beside their name. You can see who’s asking before you answer. §4.5
